Our History

The Hammersmith Club has a benevolent history extending over more than 150 years as a centre of community activity, including social events for members of all ages, games and sporting activities, and fundraising. The club's ballroom has also been a venue for community gatherings and activities of other community organisations.

1874

Foundation

The club was founded in 1874 by a handful of working men. At first, their meeting place was a small shop in Fulham Place Road, but as the membership grew, the shop soon proved too small.

1876

King St

In 1876, the club found new premises at 146 King Street, but the membership kept on growing, and they were soon forced to move again.

1881

The Grove

The club moved to Number One, The Grove, where it continued to prosper until 1924.

1924

Kent House Era

The club moved to the beautiful mansion of Kent House, where it remains today, occupying the rear portion of the building at Rutland Grove.

1974

Centenary!

The club celebrated its centenary with eight days of celebrations opened by Cr George Simpson, Mayor or Hammersmith, Cr George and Frank Tomney MP, Member for Hammersmith North. The 'glittering attractions' included dances, cabaret, a variety show and a Gala Fancy Dress Ball.

Research Project

The Social Club & Bar continues to thrive as a premier destination for social gatherings, cultural events, and all sorts of functions.
We are currently researching the club's history across its four premises and compiling a digital archive. If you would like to share your memories or memorabilia of the club, please send them (including photos of memorabilia and document/image scans) to our Secretary. Keep an eye on this page as we gather further information about historical links with other clubs in the region, early lectures given at the club and relationships with theatrical, political, sporting and fundraising activities.
